Influence of Algal Organic Matter on Algal Removal Efficiency by Flocculation of Modified Clay

چکیده

Modified clay (MC) technology is the most effective method to control harmful algal blooms (HABs) and has been widely testified in many countries recent decades. Although dissolved organic matter (dAOM) found be abundant HAB-affected waters, little known about its effect on MC flocculation. Prorocentrum donghaiense was chosen as model organism this study. The flocculation of with different concentrations dAOM observed by particle image velocimeter, removal efficiency microalgae determined using a fluorometer. results showed that small amount resulted faster flocculation, larger flocs, higher floc strength better regeneration capacity, could reach 80%. However, large amounts produced during occurrence HABs inhibit MC, only 35%. Furthermore, increase dAOM, zeta potential particles decreases from 1.56 mV −18.9 mV, repulsive force between also increases. examination 18-angle laser light scattering gel permeation chromatography specific ultraviolet absorption (SUVA254) revealed some hydrophobic macromolecules preferred attach at tiny while concentration would inhibits reducing surface activity intergranular repulsion. According findings study, dosage must increased order obtain best MC.

Retene in pyrolysates of algal and bacterial organic matter

Retene, dehydroabietin, and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroretene have been identi®ed by GC±MS in extractable aromatic hydrocarbon fractions produced by pyrolysis at 200 and 300 C of pure strains of the green alga Chlorella protothecoides and the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. The results suggest phytoplankton as a possible source of retene in Recent and ancient sediments. # 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All...

Organic derivatives of algal polysaccharides

A survey of organic derivatives of commercially important red seaweed polysaccharides is presented. The most important applications of soluble polysaccharides extracted from seaweeds utilize their ability to modify the properties of aqueous solutions. The presence of natural substituents and synthetic derivatives have broadened the area of applicability of phycocolloids. The ability of polysacc...

Removal of natural organic matter from aqueous solutions by electrocoagulation

Natural organic matter (NOM) affects some qualitative parameters of water such as color. In addition, it can deteriorate the performance of water treatment process including coagulation, adsorption, and membranes. NOM also reacts with chlorine in the chlorination process and may form disinfection by-products. The present study was carried out in laboratory-scale in a batch system using a cylind...

Removal of Dibenzothiophene from Organic Medium by Modified Zeolite

In this research, adsorption of dibenzothiophene (DBT) as a model of sulfur containing material has been studied by Pb exchanged Y-zeolite under different experimental conditions. The adsorption was kinetically fast and high adsorption capacity was obtained. The equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed using Langmuir and Freunlich isotherm models. The corresponding parameters and correlation c...

Interactions of planktonic algae and bacteria: effects on algal growth and organic matter dynamics

Interactions between phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria have been intensively studied, but many aspects of these interactions are still unknown because most of the studies were performed under non-axenic conditions. Therefore, we investigated the growth and release of dissolved organic matter of the marine diatom Thalassiosira rotula in axenic culture in comparison to T. rotula cultures i...
